Where to host your comic
Tapas is a creator/community friendly platform with many features that help creators cultivating an audience. Most comics are presented in the infinite scroll format. While its userbase is smaller than Webtoon, its main industry competitor, it has many features that help creators interact with their fans that Webtoon does not often leading to better engagement and more dedicated fans. Depending on your genre, you may have better luck finding your niche audience. Fantasy and romance tend to do well on this platform. Tapas does not have a rating system but it does have a strict no AI policy.
Webtoon is the leading comic hosting website in the western world currently. It primarily hosts comics presented in the infinite scroll format and has a female youth leaning readership. If you’re making romance comics, you’ll probably do well here. Be forewarned, Webtoon does have a bad reputation for how it treats its creators, regardless of popularity. If your series gets picked up by Webtoon, make sure to do your research and read the contract carefully. While Webtoon claims to be anti-AI, their moderation is severely lacking and their rating system is not very helpful
GlobalComix is a bit funky, having comics from Image, Marvel, and DC directly competing with indie titles on its site. Comics that are more western leaning in their art and audience will probably do better than more anime-inspired works, though they do have an indie manga section. Comics are in print book format rather than infinite scroll which may be more appealing to creators aiming to produce physical copies one day. GlobalComix unfortunately allows AI-assisted works, but they do require it to be disclosed and AI-assisted works are not eligible for any of the monetization or donations features.
Ko-mic is a new hosting site designed by a small team of programmers. While it may not have much of an established audience, if you are using social media to find readers and just need a space for your comic to live, this might be a good fit. Ko-mic has content tags that help readers understand what to expect when reading a comic which is very important for reader safety. Ko-mic has English and Spanish comics and is slowly growing with more independently created titles. This is a site to keep an eye on and potentially grow with rather than compete your way into.
Self-hosting your comic
Depending on if you have a budget, you may be able to self-host your comic on a website. This has the advantage of giving you more creative control over how your comic is seen online and you won’t be competing with other titles on the same domain, however you will have to drive traffic to your site yourself.
It is possible to host your comic on itch.io, a platform mainly known for the indie publishing of video games. In order to use itch.io to host your comic, you will have to do a little bit of coding. If you can figure it out, this is a good self-hosting option.
